2009 SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL ROUND
The SDCC Championship Finale round attracted a good entry and the weather was pretty good too!
Owen Cule changed classes to share Mandy Smith's Metro GTI and take the win in Sa, from the Honda Civic of Steve Clarke in second.
Sb saw Mark Wilson do all he could to give himself a chance of the overall Championship win by taking a max in the Honda S2000, with Robert Smith in 2 nd place in the Fiat Tipo.
But in Sc Simon Hutchinson also took a max in the V8 M3, to secure the Championship win from Mark on countback as they tied on points! James Cooksey took 2 nd in class by a tenth from Warwick Bourton in the other 2 battling M3's.
Matthew Harvey provided the entertainment in 1A, trying to take a short cut over the molehill in his Mini turbo, but had to settle for 2 nd in class behind the Cooper S of David Taylor!
Richard Girling again attracted loads of attention in the Nissan GT-R R35, putting in a stunning time of 61.31 in the big standard car!
Terry Dutton won 2B and in doing so grabbed 3 rd overall in the Championship.
Steve Male won the period defined class in the Reliant, but 2nd went to Nick Parrans-Smith in the MGB roadster and that was enough to secure the Championship class win. Well, yet again another year gone, which, despite lower entries generally, has seen some good Class battles, the Championship decided on count back, some new Class records for Mark Wilson in his S2000, and stunning times from the returning Richard Girling in the GT-R R35.
For the first time in the Championship the Novice trophy, which is presented by Paul Green Jewellers, is tied between two competitors, even on countback they cannot be split! So James Law and Emma Melhuish share the Best Novice Award.
The “Lifeline” Award, for spirit of the Championship & supporting the Championship, goes to Chris Gillie in SB having done every round in the Golf GTI in his first season competing.
Hopefully in 2010 an upturn in the economic climate may prevail and bring the return of a few entries missing from this year.
Thanks to all entrants for “making” the Championship, the individual clubs for putting on the well run events, and again to “Lifeline” and T.B.S., for their Championship support, in the 12th year of the Championship!
Finally, congratulations to all the award winners, and we hope to see as many people as possible at the SDCC Presentation Dinner in February, at Moor Hall Sutton Coldfield, which is always a great “Event”, really good value for money, and a chance to get out of the garage, away from the winter rebuilds for a night!
